You can then ignore most of them. The only ones that you need are the ones saying SQL Express WT, that means With Tools and if you’ve got a 64-bit version of Windows you need the x64, if you’ve got a 32-bit version of Windows, you need the x86. This gives you most of the tools that the Enterprise version gives you with just one caveat. It cannot be used for real life situations, it cannot be installed on a production server. It’s licenced for demonstration use or development learning, testing, that sort of thing. Basically it’s ideal for you. And if you find a good source,it’s not that expensive.

You can see it gives you the Business Intelligence tools,so if you are going down the SQL Server route,if you want to do exams 462, 463 and 466, 467, then my advice to you is to get the Developer edition. It’s fairly cheap, it gives you everything you need. But for now, for 461, all we need to do is look at TSQL and for that the Express version is fine. Now, make sure you instal Service Pack 2. If you just type in SQL Server 2012 Express, you may just get the Standard version without Service Pack 2 and that might not instal on your machine.

Obviously Microsoft have done some tweaking. Now, as you can see we’ve got a few minutes to go before it actually downloads, so why don’t you download it for yourself, so remember, go to Google and type in SQL Server Express 2012 sp2.

One of my frustrations with SQL Server 2016, is that the SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is no longer included with the database instance installation. It is now has its own separate installation.

Problem:

The problem is when I click on the “Install SQL Server Management Tools” in the SQL Server Installation Center, an web browser pops up wanting to perform a web based installation. Our SQL Server database servers can not connect to the internet, so the error “This page can’t be displayed” is displayed in the web browser.

Resolution:

To resolve this, I had to download the SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) installation executable from the MSDN on my workstation.

A pop-up may appear depending on the type of web browser that being using. Click the Save File button to save the file: SSMS-Setup-ENU.exe.

I moved the executable file (SSMS-Setup-ENU.exe) to the server that I wanted to install SSMS on. Then I right click on the executable file to run the installation as “Run as administrator”.

A pop-up may appear about User Account Control, I clicked the Yes button.

Then the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio installation splash screen appeared. I just clicked on the Install button.

The installation will started, which took a couple of minutes because I was on a small server.

During the install the progress bars screen changed.

Finally, when it completed, I clicked on the close button.

Note: I was never given the option to choose the location to install the files on the server.

With out rebooting, I was able to open SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), and connect to the local database instance.
